Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly met with Liu Zhengjun, Vice President of China’s CITIC Group, to discuss expanding bilateral cooperation, particularly in infrastructure and water desalination. The meeting highlighted Egypt’s ambition to localize the manufacturing of components for reverse osmosis desalination plants, a move aimed at strengthening domestic capabilities and reducing reliance on imports.

CITIC Group, a global investment powerhouse with a portfolio valued at $1.7 trillion and operations in 250 countries, expressed readiness to support Egypt’s desalination goals. Liu confirmed the group’s willingness to both manufacture components locally and finance related projects.

Madbouly welcomed the proposal, noting its alignment with Egypt’s national plan to increase seawater desalination capacity to 5 million cubic meters per day within five years, and eventually to 10 million cubic meters per day. He also suggested CITIC could become the exclusive supplier of components for Egypt’s future desalination facilities.

Beyond water infrastructure, the Prime Minister expressed interest in collaborating with CITIC in agricultural development, particularly in seed production, recognizing the group’s expertise in the sector.

This strategic dialogue underscores Egypt’s commitment to sustainable development and technological self-sufficiency through international partnerships.
