Norwegian water-tech innovator Flocean is set to revolutionize desalination with the launch of Flocean One, the world’s first commercial subsea desalination plant. Scheduled for deployment in 2026 at Norway’s Mongstad Industrial Park, this breakthrough aims to address global freshwater shortages driven by climate change, population growth, and industrial demand.
Unlike conventional desalination facilities that require extensive coastal land and face lengthy permitting processes, Flocean’s subsea approach offers a compact, scalable, and cost-efficient solution. By operating offshore, the system minimizes environmental impact and leverages natural ocean pressure to reduce energy consumption compared to traditional reverse osmosis plants.
Flocean recently extended its Series A funding to $22.5 million, adding global water leader Xylem Inc. as a strategic investor. The partnership will accelerate commercialization and expand projects across Europe, the Middle East, the Americas, and island nations. Flocean has already demonstrated success at its Mongstad test site, desalinating seawater for over a year.
This innovation comes as conventional desalination struggles to keep pace with rising water demand. Flocean’s subsea technology represents a new economic model for water security, combining sustainability with scalability for regions facing acute water stress.
