Saudi Arabia has achieved a major milestone in sustainable water and energy infrastructure with the integration of solar power into the Shuaibah 3 Independent Water Project, a large-scale seawater desalination facility on the Red Sea coast. The project now operates with clean energy supplied by a 65MW photovoltaic (PV) plant, developed by Sineng Electric in collaboration with LBPKSA.
Built by the Shuaibah 3 Company, with Doosan Enerbility as the main EPC contractor, this initiative sets a regional benchmark for combining renewable energy with critical water infrastructure. The PV system is engineered for up to 99% efficiency, supports a DC/AC ratio of 1.8, and incorporates Sineng Electric’s 6.6MW medium-voltage turnkey solution, including transformers and RMUs for compact, reliable performance in harsh desert conditions.
By leveraging solar energy, the project reduces operational costs, simplifies installation and maintenance, and lowers the Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE). This approach aligns with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 and long-term net-zero goals, demonstrating how renewable energy can power essential desalination processes while minimizing environmental impact.
The Shuaibah project represents a significant step toward expanding solar-powered desalination across the region, ensuring sustainable water supply and supporting the Kingdom’s clean energy transition.
