The temporary desalination unit in Potima—designed to produce 2,000 cubic metres of water per day—has entered its final testing phase and is expected to begin full operations soon, Akamas mayor Marinos Lambrou said on Thursday.
Speaking to the Cyprus News Agency, Lambrou explained that water will run through the unit continuously for 24 hours to complete quality‑control checks, noting that all results so far have been positive.
Once the Water Development Department grants final approval, the unit could begin supplying water to the network as early as Friday.
Lambrou added that the two small mobile desalination units already installed in Potima, each with a daily output of 2,000 cubic metres, will significantly bolster the water supply for Pegeia and Kissonerga, both under the Akamas municipality.
A larger 10,000‑cubic‑metre mobile desalination unit is also being installed in the area and is expected to be operational by September. “This unit will supply water to the westernmost parts of Paphos and reduce reliance on water currently transported from the Asprokremmos refinery,” Lambrou said.
He also provided an update on the 15,000‑cubic‑metre desalination unit located between Kouklia and Mantria, which was heavily damaged by fire in December 2024. According to Lambrou, the facility is expected to reopen within the next few weeks.
