IDE Technologies has been awarded a major Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contract by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to design and build a large-scale seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) desalination plant at Manori, on Mumbai’s western coastline. This project marks a significant step toward securing the city’s water supply amid rising demand and climate variability.
The Manori desalination plant will initially produce 200 million liters per day (MLD) of potable water, with infrastructure designed to double capacity to 400 MLD in the future. The facility will feature an offshore seawater intake several kilometers from the shoreline, ensuring environmental protection while delivering a stable, drought-proof water source.
Key highlights of the project:
- Long-term reliability: IDE will operate and maintain the plant for 20 years post-commissioning, guaranteeing consistent delivery of high-quality drinking water.
- Energy-efficient technology: Advanced desalination systems tailored to Mumbai’s coastal conditions will minimize energy use and environmental impact.
- Strategic partnership: IDE will collaborate with GVPR Engineers Limited, leveraging local expertise for construction and execution.
- Climate resilience: The project provides a water source independent of monsoon variability, strengthening Mumbai’s long-term water security.
IDE Technologies CEO Alon Tavor described the initiative as a strategic investment in Mumbai’s future, demonstrating how large-scale desalination can safeguard megacities under climate stress
