Arizona is taking bold steps to address its long-term water challenges by advancing four major projects, including large-scale desalination initiatives. The Water Infrastructure Finance Authority of Arizona (WIFA) has moved these proposals into the study phase under its Long-Term Water Augmentation Fund (LTWAF), marking a significant milestone in the state’s strategy to secure reliable water supplies amid persistent drought.
The selected projects include two Gulf of California desalination concepts and complementary water reuse and storage initiatives. Leading the efforts are the ACCIONA-Fengate Water Augmentation Alliance and EPCOR Water Innovation Partners, chosen from an initial pool of 17 qualified teams. These projects aim to deliver sustainable water solutions through advanced engineering and innovative financing models.
The study phase will assess technical feasibility, environmental impacts, permitting requirements, and community input. By prioritizing desalination, Arizona is positioning itself at the forefront of water resilience, ensuring future supplies for cities, agriculture, and industry while reducing dependence on dwindling Colorado River resources.
